This is a song about the big bang and the expansion of the universe, and the scattering of energy. I would say that I worked really hard on this song for this compo but in actuality I finished this in 2013 and have been sitting on it ever since. Didn't make the cut for the Coffee Zone. Parts that weren't as effective as I originally thought: -I hate the instrument I made for the moving "tingy" part in the intro.  It like... hits and then drops back.  It needs to be more "forward" and less laggy. -The breakdown at 1:40 needs more intensity or building.  I think I thought this sounded okay... but the repetition is a bit much.  It doesn't develop the way I originally intended and that frustrates me as I listen to it. -The little pulse responses at 2:50 or so were supposed to be softer and I never fixed it.  They break the listener out of the great vibes I'm trying to create.  Frustrated with that. -The no drum breakdown at 3:40~ has some weak chordal movement that only became apparently later. Alright, you read the title and this might have been the first response... A Hayd'n Semi-Meme!? What kind of title is that!? In reality, it's my abandoned NSF Mania Round 5 entry, abandoned on March 3rd, 2014 and revived for Famicompo Pico. It's also a multi-computer entry: the original was made on an iMac G5. The G5 was retired in mid-August due to hardware failure, so it ended up on the Intel Mac. This also qualifies as a cartridge entry, as I made a conscious attempt to keep the filesize below 64KB. I also hacked the sound driver to increase the chance of the process succeeding by keeping the last few bytes open for vectors. For those of you curious what exactly I was trying to accomplish, here's the original descriptions for Hayd 'N Seek and Semi Meme: - Semi Meme Pick two channels! You must use only these channels for a minimum of thirty seconds. - Hayd'n'Seek The melodic fragment "B - A - D - D - G" must feature prominently in the main melody. There's a couple things in here that are just not very effective.  The feel change at :20 comes from out of no where and it's very difficult to figure out what's going on.  The melody seems to just trail off and then repeat at random spots.  When creating mixed meter, it's important to ensure that the listener is able to follow the changes lest they get lost.  It's not that your intentions aren't noble here; they just aren't realized fully. The background arps at 1:28 are very jarring and obscure the melody at times.  The melody there is detuned, I think?  It's hard on the ears.  Also, at 1:52, the high pitch melody seems slower than the other melody. At 2:29, it sounds like you put the patterns in exactly as the appear at the beginning.  The result is a skip in the feel at 2:33.  Also, the final note is seemingly random compared to the rest of the piece. So why is this a 4 and not a 5?  Here are the differences, to me: -The melody is a bit flat.  It's a good melody but it could use flash or echo or doubling something.  It's a bit fragile. -The song is very long.  We really only get new material around 4:30 or so.  I REALLY like this material but we had to endure a lot to get there. -The chords are wonderful but realized in such a way that is very basic - IE pulses sitting around 5 volume and sitting on a note without any shape.  If there was a cool bassline in there or maybe some hits on those chords instead of just constant sustains, I think it would add a LOT to the piece. -The drums need more treble.  The noise channel could have added a lot to what's there - especially if it doubled the snare hits.  Right now, it's just mostly being used as a high hat. -I'm not 100% sure I like the triangle toms.  I've thought about them a lot.  They are quite unique.  I'm more indifferent to them, I guess. Overall, a melody needs to go somewhere or else it's just wasted notes.  Every note needs intention and purpose.  There's no reason to put a note there unless it means something. The part at 2:08 is risky but ultimately perplexing but 2:38 is much better - that groove is really nice. The held note at the end is very jarring and the note at the very end actually hurt my ears in my headphone.  I'd be careful with volumes.
